Encoded Archival Description

Biography or History: In the few years following the founding of Carolina colony in 1670, the new settlement struggled to survive. It became clear to the Lords Proprietors in Great Britain that additional support would be needed for the fledgling colony to succeed. In 1674, the Proprietors made a written agreement to send more supplies. Only seven of the eight Proprietors were given space to sign; William Berkeley, who had not contributed any support for the colony, was excluded. A notable feature of this document is John Locke's signature on the reverse. Locke was the secretary for the Proprietors.

Custodial History: This manuscript is one of three original copies. All three were held successively by the Earls of Malmesbury, who inherited many early South Carolina colonial documents. This copy was gifted to SCDAH by William James Harris, 6th Earl of Malmesbury, for the South Carolina Tricentennial in 1970.
