Declaration of the immediate causes which induce and justify the secession of South Carolina, 1860

Encoded Archival Description

Biography or History: On December 20, 1860, South Carolina issued the Ordinance of Secession, a month after the election of Abraham Lincoln. The Ordinance only consisted of a few sentences and formally stated South Carolina's intention to separate itself from the United States. Members of the Secession Convention had previously agreed that a second document would be written describing in detail the reasoning and justification behind the decision to secede. A committee was formed under Christopher Memminger and tasked with composing the declaration. On December 24, 1860, the Declaration of Immediate Causes was issued.
