Scope and Content: This series contains standard certificates of birth for South Carolina for 1915-1920. Information on the certificates includes name, gender, and date of birth of the child; name, birthplace, race, and occupation of the father; birthplace, race, occupation, and maiden name of the mother; whether the child was part of a set of twins, triplets, etc.; whether the child was premature or full-term, legitimate (product of a married couple); whether the child was stillborn; and certification of physician or midwife. The series also contains affidavits made by individuals to amend certificates, as well as the amended certificates produced as a result. Often these resulted from misspelled or incomplete information on the original certificates. Affidavits for amendment contain the original information, the corrections needed, and a description of the documentation the individual provided to support the changes.

Arrangement: Series is arranged by year, thereunder by document type: affidavit/amendment or certificate. Records are then roughly arranged chronologically by month, and thereunder by alphabetically by county.

Conditions Governing Access: Birth certificates are sealed for 100 years after the year of birth by the Dept. of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). Copies of birth certificates for 1916 to present can be obtained by contacting the Vital Records section of DHEC.

Other Finding Aid: Entire series is indexed and available through the South Carolina Electronic Records Archive (SCERA), which is maintained by the Archive. Records are searchable by name, date of birth (in year-month-day format; ex.: 1915-01-01), mother's maiden name, and certificate number. The series also contains a spreadsheet index arranged alphabetically by the child's surname. The index also includes the certificate number, county of birth, mother's maiden name, and digital file name.

Location of Originals: The original certificates and their microfilm counterparts are currently held by DHEC.

Alternative Form Available: DHEC retains the original certificates and the microfilm made from them. If a certificate found on SCERA is illegible, contact DHEC to obtain a copy from another format. Also contact DHEC to obtain if a certified copy of a certificate is required.
